Art as a form of alternative medicine

What if we were to consider art-making as an alternative health practice; one that places emphasis on preventing poor health, afflictions or ‘dis’ease under the premise that by ignoring or deferring our essential creative selves we could be affecting or doing a disservice to our general health and well-being?

Think of art as another way to maintain emotional and spiritual well-being…again, two highly regarded and sound aspects of practicing good health.

If we consider artmaking to be a complementary health practice…an activity that encourages stress reduction and relaxation and promotes healing, we can think of creativity as a form of treatment; one which can restore an individual’s vital energy and state of equilibrium.

During a session, I begin with a guided meditation which helps individuals create a mental picture of comfort and ease, followed by a simple art exercise enabling them to communicate or articulate their focus on paper. Each two-hour session is designed to help individuals delve into the realm of their personal creativity within a calm, supportive, and confidential setting. Together, using intuition and perception to guide us, we witness and read the outcome of the session, seeking to understand the messages that have emerged from within.

AWE-Inspired Creativity

Awaken by Arlene Westen Evans

Envision the creative possibilities that lie within you! Generate new ideas and confidence in yourself and your artistic abilities!

The workshops, programs, and services that I offer are designed to guide and help you reach your goals, awaken your imagination and intuition, and provide pathways to happiness and well-being.

Especially supportive of endeavours that celebrate creative expression, I have worked with individuals and with groups of aspiring artists (and non-artists) over many years, helping people develop personal, professional and artistic skills. I believe that we are all born with the inate ability to create, and success and self-fulfillment doesn’t just happen to other people. It is within everyones grasp to lead an individual and ‘artful’ life and derive satisfaction through personal accomplishment and creative self-expression.

My studies and research in behaviour and art therapy and a never-ending fascination with the connection between creativity and spirituality have guided me and helped me put into practice energetic and purposeful ways to promote health and self-awareness. Art has been my ministry…and my call has been to share the many ways that artmaking can enhance one’s life.
